With the hiring of a new offensive coordinator, Illinois coaches have begun recruiting players to…
In fact, Harris (6-3, 195) had quite the night in just the third quarter alone of the Bulldogs' 54-51 win over visiting Shiloh Christian.
He caught 4 passes for over 160 yards and 3 touchdowns in the third quarter alone and had 8 catches for 229 yards and 4 touchdowns overall on the night against a team that was ranked as high as sixth nationally in one poll.
"We knew we were playing one of the top teams in the nation and apparently in the state," Harris said. "We knew this is kind of like their state championship, playing up with a 5A team – two powerhouses playing.
"We prepared hard," Harris continued. "We worked. I don't know how much I ran in practice just preparing for this and getting in shape for both ways. We came out hard and studied film. We probably practiced four hours a day watching films and weights and all."
It certainly paid off and Harris - who also had 8 tackles - had the honor of knocking down the final pass of Shiloh quarterback Kiehl Frazier as time ran out.
"We call it victory D and we have three guys deep," Harris said. "We just covered back and I saw Kiehl rare back and throw it and I knew it was time to knock it down and get the game over with."
Harris, who has caught 17 passes for 390 yards and 6 TDs this season and racked up 325 yards on his last 12 catches, is certainly someone who is getting looks in recruiting, with offers from Arkansas State (a few days after the game) and Missouri State.
"It's going pretty good," Harris said. "Arkansas State and Missouri State were here tonight to watch. It is going great. I am talking to Wyoming quite a bit and I am about to go up there, fly up and watch a game. I've talked to the University of Penn and Northwestern quite a bit.
"I am staying in touch, staying in touch with other guys and just looking for whatever school pops up again," Harris added. "I am available right now and just leaving my options open."
He certainly hopes Arkansas turns out to be one of those options so he would have a chance to follow in the footsteps of Bulldogs turned Razorbacks Lucas Miller and Tyler Wilson.
"I love their program," Harris said of the Razorbacks. "That is probably some of the hardest that I have ever been worked in a three-day camp when I went up there. Coach Petrino gets after you, works a lot and I think that is kind of what has developed me as a better receiver – Coach Petrino helping me with my steps and my routes and what I was doing. I love the program up there – great weight room, great players. Tyler and Lucas are both up there."
Harris said that Greenwood saw some things on tape that it could take advantage of against the Saints.
"They are kind of soft in that they are eight yards off with the corner and we knew with our athletes – who are probably some of the top receivers in the state corp-wise – we worked hard…We tried to figure out their weakness and watch film and figured out where the pockets are, especially on defense and that is where we tried to throw it to."
He loves playing for Greenwood head coach Rick Jones and his staff.
"Some of the smartest coaches I think in the state in my opinion," Harris said. " I love playing for the guy – great attitude, positive all the time. I love the coaches."
