Unlike several of the 19 recruits that came in on official visits to the University of Arkansas this past weekend, Butler County (Kan.) Community College defensive back Rudell Crim knew his way around.

The Florida native has made the visit before to see buddy, fellow former Tallahassee Rickards star and current Razorback Michael Smith play as well as just being around Fayetteville lounging around.

But that didn't keep the 6-1, 180-pound safety prospect with 4.4 speed from being overwhelmed anyway.

“It was just a great, great visit,” Crim said. “I had been around before and send a lot of stuff, but never had it just laid out the way the coaches did this weekend. It is a special place with great players and great people to be around, great coaches and great fans.”

Crim, who had 36 tackles and three interceptions on Butler's junior college back-to-back national championship team this season, had already visited Oregon.

He is currently at home in Tallahassee right now and will take a visit to South Florida before heading back to school.

He could actually enroll at South Florida right now because of Conference USA standards, but has decided that he will go back to Butler this next semester to take a course that both the SEC and Pac-10 require for him to be eligible.

“As soon as I get done with that and head back to school, I will sit down with my coach and have an announcement quickly,” Crim said. “I can't give you the exact day, but it will be soon.”

One thing that really impressed Crim this weekend was the amount of time Razorback head coach Bobby Petrino spent with the recruits.

“On some visits you go and the head coach is not around much at all,” noted Crim, who took all five of his visits as a high school senior. “Coach Petrino is always around, always talking to you off to the side, always letting you know how interested he is in everything about you. That's really cool and very much appreciated.”

Crim, who is versatile enough to play both cornerback and safety, is well aware that if he comes to Arkansas that he will have a chance to make an immediate impact.

“That's big because I have only two years and I can't afford to go someplace and watch from the bench,” Crim said. “They really explained to me how much they were counting on me to come in, work hard and get it done right away. I feel very much wanted by this staff.”

Crim, who will have three years to play two, enjoyed getting to be around Smith, who he played with in high school.

“He's a great guy that accomplished so much and it would really be nice to play with him one more time,” Crim said. “That's nice, but the thing about it is that I have to make the decision on what is best for me because he will only be there one more year.”

He is also friends with Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln offensive lineman Shauntez Bruce, who also visited this past weekend and committed.

“He had a great time,” Crim said. “We all did. The thing about Arkansas is they make you feel like part of the team, part of the family even if you are just a recruit. It's the place that can really be a home away from home.”
