It’s become very apparent that the University of Arkansas’ football recruiting is going so well right now that the Razorback staff is really having to be selective.
That’s the prize for having 21 commitments before the calendar turned to November.
It’s also clear that the final spots will be heavy on defensive ends and defensive tackles.
“The coaches told me their main focus right now is getting some defensive lineman,” noted Huntington (WV) athlete C.J. Crawford, one of three players that officially visited last weekend. “They are really happy with the way recruiting is going and just have a few sports left.”
There certainly are some big-time prospects out there the Razorbacks would love to get in the fold.
That includes Destrehan (La.) High defensive tackle Darrington Sentimore (6-3, 266, 4.8), a current soft commit to Alabama that nevertheless took an official visit to check out Arkansas over the weekend.
“I really enjoyed my visit,” Sentimore said. “There are some really nice people there, it’s a great program, one that stresses academics as well and not just football. I love how the coaches are real laid back and not uptight and it is a place that I think I could come in and play early.”
Sentimore got a chance to see high school teammate and current Razorback Jerico Nelson get a sack on the first play of Arkansas’ 30-23 win over previously unbeaten and No. 18 Tulsa on Saturday.
He arrived to Reynolds Razorback Stadium about 30 minutes before kickoff after flying in Saturday morning.
“He (Nelson) really loves it here and has told me how if you come in and put the work in and make plays, these coaches will play you right away,” Sentimore said. “That’s something that I really like.”
Senitmore already has 10 sacks this season – but surprisingly doesn’t think that is the strongest part of his game.
“I am working on my rush and think that is a place I can get much better at even though I have 10 sacks this season,” Sentimore said. “What I really feel good about is my play against the run.”
Sentimore said that late Monday night that he still considers himself a commit to Alabama “at the moment.”
“I am going to take my official visit to Alabama after the season is over (in December),” Sentimore said. “Then I will sit down with my mom and decide just which is the best place for me.”
Sentimore and Crawford were joined as official visitors by Columbus (GA) Carver linebacker LeRon Furr (6-3, 225).
Crawford, who also arrived on Saturday, morning, admits he was a little thrown when he landed at XNA airport in Highfill, about 30 minutes away the UA campus.
“I landed at the airport and saw all the cows and trees and stuff and thought ‘oh, man, what is this place?’ Crawford remembered. “But then we drove a little ways and I saw what a great place it is and where everything just starts popping up.”
He was excited about what he found during the weekend.
“I was really impressed with the game, the atmosphere and how crazy all the fans are,” Crawford said. “The coaches were all real cool.”
Crawford had four touchdowns on Friday night with touchdown runs of 55, 18 and 10 yards and also a 49-yard scoring catch.
He had 174 all-purpose yards as his Huntington team downed Nitro 35-20 for its first win in a second straight 1-9 season.
“I got some touches and had a very good night,” Crawford said. “We went out and really played well and didn’t want to lose our last high school game.”
Crawford is very interested in landing at Arkansas, but will take a visit to Purdue on Nov. 21-23 and also is still considering Arkansas.
“They are not really taking commitments from wide receivers or athletes right now, just the defensive tackles,” Crawford said. “But they said they are very, very interested in me and are going to come down in December and we will talk things over.”
