Thomas Flips to Arkansas
Muskogee (Okla.) High defensive tackle Robert Thomas (6-2, 311) publicly announced Monday what he had told the Razorback coaching staff privately a week ago.
"Yes, I'm a Razorback," Thomas said Monday afternoon.
Thomas orginally committed to Kansas State, but got an Arkansas offer and attended a game and decided it was the right place for him.
"The tough part was calling the Kansas State coaches and telling them no, but I just think Arkansas is the place for me," Thomas said. "I told them (the Wildcats) no last night so it was time to go ahead and let everybody know that I was going to be Razorback. I can't wait to play in the SEC." He notes that both head coach Bobby Petrino and defensive line coach Bobby Allen made quite the impression on him.
"The head coach is amazing," Thomas said. "He is one of the best coaches I have met. He is down to earth. Coach Allen is amazing, too. I love it down there."
They clearly got across to Thomas how much he was both wanted and needed.
"It is a big plus to be wanted so much like that," Thomas said. "They really make me feel that they want and need me and that they think I can be a special player for them."
He becomes the 19th overall commitment for the UA's 2009 class and the third from Oklahoma to verbally pledge to sign with the Razorbacks.
It certainly didn't hurt Arkansas that Fayetteville is a mere two hours from Muskogee while Kansas State's campus is 5-plus hours away.
"Being close to home is both what I want and need," Thomas said. "It is just a short drive."
