The look on University of Arkansas commit Turell Williams’ face on Friday night was one of pleasure and pain.

The pleasure was from the 6-2, 215-pound running back accounting for over 100 yards rushing and receiving as his Helena-West Helena Central team took down Class 5A No. 1 Pulaski Academy 46-29.

Not to mention his teammate Darius Winston – the state’s top-ranked player - had announced earlier in the day that he would be joining Williams in playing for the Razorbacks next season.

“I was real excited,” Williams said. “That was great news for us (the Razorbacks). It all made for a great day. We get the number one player in the state and then we go out and beat the number one team in the state.”

The pain was from a shot to the ribs he took during the game.

“I took a shot and I begin having a little trouble breathing, but this win makes it all feel better,” Williams said. “I just had to suck it up and help my team get this win.”

Williams provided some tough inside yards, got outside a couple of times and also showed his versatility by hauling in three passes in addition to a pair of two-point conversions.

“They had a tough defense and we weren’t just going to be able to run all over them,” Williams said. “I respect their defense and the yards that I did get, I was excited about what I got.”

The game was just 18-14 late in the third quarter before the offensive fireworks began to show up.

“We still weren’t at our best,” Williams said. “We did pretty good, played pretty good the first half, but we knew we could play better so we can out the second half and did a real good job.

“The defense did a heck of a job,” Williams said. “I think it is the best defense in the state with the guys that we’ve got.”

Williams is excited about what the future might hold for his team this season.

“I don't think we are really respected in the state yet, but with a win like that it should get a little bit more,” Williams said. “We are a real good team.”

Williams is also a very nice pick-up for the Razorbacks per Central head coach Russell Smith.

“Obviously Terell has also committed to the Arkansas Razorbacks,” Smith said. “He is a big kid - 6-2, 215-pound kid - and is going to be a load to bring down this year. He is very excited about this season,” Smith said. “He was kind of hampered last year by a toe injury. He got that fully repaired and is ready to go. I think he is going to put on a show.”

He lines up at running back on offense and safety on defense.

“I believe that he will probably play safety (in college),” Smith said, “but I think that if they can put him at halfback in the offense, he has great hands and can really catch the ball out of the backfield.”
