Around The HORN: Diamond Hogs Notebook
By
Vernon Tarver
The Morning News/Razorback Central
Posted Mar 16, 2008
Un-Forsythe Like For Logan Forsythe, it was a weekend to forget at third base.
Forsythe — usually one of the most dependable defensive players you’ll find — had three errors in the weekend series against
Georgia
. And while that’s not uncommon for some, it’s a rarity for the Razorbacks’ junior. In fact, it marked the first time Forsythe ever had three errors in a three-game series while at Arkansas. His previous high was a two-error series at Tennessee during his freshman season.
The two errors Forsythe committed Sunday was also a first, as he had previously never had a two-error game in his UA career.
Don’t Panic
Losing two of three games in the opening Southeastern Conference series isn’t what Arkansas had in mind, especially after it won the first game against Georgia on Friday. But despite the Razorbacks’ 1-2 start, there’s no need to get nervous just yet.
Arkansas is 7-10 in the opening series of SEC play since joining the league in 1992, and now just 3-3 in the first series of the season under coach Dave Van Horn. But in seven of the nine previous 1-2 starts, the Diamond Hogs have bounced back and finished in the top eight of the SEC and advanced to the conference tournament.
Bullpen Blues
Take away Kendal Korbal’s performance on Friday night and it wasn’t a very good weekend for the Arkansas relief pitchers. Actually, it was downright ugly.
Korbal was magnificent in his 3 1/3 innings of relief this past weekend — allowing no runs and striking out five — but after that things went bad in the bullpen. On Saturday and Sunday, the Arkansas relievers combined to pitch 9 2/3 innings, giving up 17 earned runs, 18 hits and six walks.
