Campbell To Join Nutt At Ole Miss

FAYETTEVILLE — Another Arkansas assistant coach will join Houston Nutt’s staff at Ole Miss next season.
Louis Campbell, who will serve as
Arkansas
’ interim defensive coordinator for the Cotton Bowl, has agreed to be an assistant with the Rebels. Campbell’s role at Ole Miss has not been defined, but it’s believed he’ll work with the secondary as either a safeties or cornerbacks coach.
Campbell will remain at Arkansas through the end of the season, and he’ll continue to coach the defense against No. 7 Missouri in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1.
“I’m excited about Louis Campbell joining the Ole Miss family,” Nutt said in a statement released by Ole Miss on Friday. “He brings a wealth of experience to our staff, having gotten his start over 30 years ago when Bear Bryant hired him at Alabama. Louis will do an excellent job working with our coaches on the defensive side of the ball.”
Campbell has been a longtime member of Arkansas’ football program, dating back to his time as a record-breaking defensive back with the Razorbacks from 1970-72.
Campbell served as Nutt’s secondary coach in 2006 before moving back into an administrative role this year. He was Arkansas’ assistant athletic director for internal operations before being named the team’s interim defensive coordinator after Nutt’s resignation on Nov. 26.
Campbell becomes the sixth Arkansas assistant coach to follow Nutt to Ole Miss. Offensive coordinator David Lee, offensive line coach Mike Markuson, tight ends coach James Shibest and defensive line coach Tracy Rocker have already indicated they’ll join Nutt’s staff after the bowl game.
Former Arkansas safeties coach and recruiting coordinator Chris Vaughn started working at Ole Miss earlier this month.
Also, sources familiar with the situation said Friday that cornerbacks coach Bobby Allen is expected to be retained by newly hired Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino. An official announcement likely won’t come anytime soon.
Allen is expected to remain on the staff, but it’s unclear what his role will be. Petrino said earlier this week he hopes to have his staff hired by Jan. 3.
Petrino, who was hired as Nutt’s replacement on Dec. 11, has already added two assistants to his staff. Paul Petrino, his younger brother, was hired as Arkansas’ offensive coordinator on Dec. 14.
Bobby Petrino also said this week that Arkansas running backs coach Tim Horton will be retained. Horton’s role has not been announced, but there is talk that he could be the Razorbacks’ running backs coach and recruiting coordinator next season.
