Memphis Whitehaven linebacker Tenarius Wright (6-2, 225, 4.7), who was actually born in Arkansas, has decided to return home so to speak.

Wright, born in Anthonyville, has confirmed he committed Wednesday night to play his college football at the University of Arkansas.

"I just didn't see any reason to go ahead and wait any longer," Wright said. "Arkansas is a great place."

Arkansas joined Ole Miss, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Mississippi State and Indiana as schools in the hunt for Wright, who has averaged 14 tackles per game after being out the first three games with a hairline fracture of his right foot.

The Razorbacks always seemed like a pretty heavy favorite out of that bunch for a guy whose nickname is Tank.

"I think right now Arkansas is No. 1 and where I need to be," Wright said. “I like what they have going up there and think I could come in and help out at linebacker. They are talking about playing me at middle linebacker.”

Whitehaven coach Rodney Saulsberry says that the Razorbacks are landing a very versatile player.

"The big thing about him is his versatility," Saulsberry said. "He can play any of the linebacker spots - the will, the Middle and the strongside. He can also go down at tackle and lines up at end sometimes for us. We just put him where he can make plays and that's exactly what he does.

"One of the other big things is his leadership ability," Saulsberry said. "He leads both with his words and his actions. He gets the job done, is one of our captains and is a great teammate."

Wright took an unofficial visit to Arkansas along with Whitehaven quarterback Garrick Jones when the Razorbacks played Kentucky in late September.

“I was so impressed with everything,” Wright said. “The coaches, the facilities, that big weight room and the atmosphere at the game.”

Since that game Arkansas assistant coach Tim Horton has been in constant contact.

“I really like Coach Horton and he’s real cool,” Wright said. “He’s called me when he is allowed to and he’s also come over and watched me play. He’s really let me know how much Arkansas wants me and it feels good to be wanted that much.”

Whitehaven is 9-1 this season, ranked No. 3 in the Commercial Appeal’s Dandy Dozen in Memphis, its only loss has been to No. 1 White Station and the Tigers are undefeated with Wright in the lineup.

The Tigers are coming off a 35-6 win over Wooddale last weekend and face Ridgeway in the playoffs this Friday night.

“We feel like it is all coming together for us right now,” Wright said.
