Arkansas Report Card Vs. Auburn
Running Backs — C
On most days, Arkansas' backfield duo of Darren McFadden and Felix Jones are guaranteed to get their yards. But they didn't against Auburn. McFadden was held to just 43 yards on 17 carries. The Heisman Trophy candidate couldn't find many holes to run through, but that was the offensive line's fault. Meanwhile, Jones didn't get many opportunities to touch the football. He had only six carries for 42 yards.
Wide Receivers — C-
Like Casey Dick, Arkansas' wide receivers have not looked impressive this season. But that has become a fact of life with Marcus Monk and Crosby Tuck sidelined with injuries. Lucas Miller scored the team's only touchdown on a 13-yard catch, and he led the receivers with two catches for 25 yards. Reggie Fish and London Crawford had only one catch each. It was not enough.
Offensive Line — F
Arkansas' offensive line had a rough night. The Razorbacks could never get their running game going, and that starts with the front line not opening up lanes for McFadden and Jones. Arkansas finished with 67 yards rushing, 271 yards below its season average. At the same time, the offensive line gave up two sacks.
Defensive Line — B
Defensive tackle Marcus Harrison put together his best performance of the season, recording 13 tackles — including two for losses. Fellow defensive tackle Ernest Mitchell added 10 tackles, and the defensive line as a whole limited Auburn for the most part. Still, the unit recorded no sacks.
Linebackers — A- Strongside linebacker Freddie Fairchild and middle linebacker Weston Dacus seemed to be everywhere Saturday night, combining for 29 tackles. Fairchild led the Hogs with 15 tackles, and he recorded their only sack. Dacus forced a fumble on an Auburn drive that would have likely led to a score, and even Elston Forte had 14 tackles.
Secondary — B-
For the most part, the defensive backs got their jobs done. Auburn quarterback Brandon Cox completed only 13 passes for 101 yards. But the secondary committed too many penalties, and cornerback Jerell Norton gave up a 30-yard crossing route that helped set up the Tigers for the game-winning field goal.
Special Teams — D
Arkansas still can't find a punt returner who can catch the football. Houston Nutt thought he might have found his man in Norton, but the sophomore fumbled back-to-back punt returns. Kicker Alex Tejada missed his only attempt — a 41-yarder — and Brian Vavra helped give Auburn good field position on its final drive with a bad kickoff that sailed out of bounds.
Coaching — D
It's tough to knock the coaching staff since defensive coordinator Reggie Herring had a great game plan to slow down the Tigers. Saturday was Arkansas' best defensive performance of the season, surrendering no touchdowns and only 290 yards total. But offensive coordinator David Lee was too conservative with his playcalling, and it led to a bad night for the offense. The playcalling didn't get creative until the very end. Not surprisingly, that led to the team's only touchdown.
