UA Officials Discuss Naming Field

FAYETTEVILLE — It soon could be Frank Broyles Field at Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Arkansas officials have discussed a proposal to name the football field after Broyles, who will retire on Dec. 31 after spending 50 years at the school as either a coach or athletic director.

The proposal has not yet been officially approved, so for now it’s still an idea that was supposed to be kept a secret from Broyles.

“It has to go through certain channels and things, so I don’t know how it’s going to turn out yet,” Arkansas senior associate athletic director Bill Gray said Monday night.

Broyles, who has been Arkansas’ athletic director since 1973, announced Feb. 17 that he was stepping down at the end of the year. Pittsburgh athletic director Jeff Long was introduced earlier this month as Broyles’ replacement.

Arkansas’ football players have worn a sticker on their helmets this season in Broyles’ honor, and several tributes to him can be expected over the next few months.
