SPRINGDALE -- Sources confirmed Monday that Springdale quarterback Mitch Mustain withdrew his commitment to the University of Arkansas in a meeting with Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt during the day.
Mustain, Springdale coach Gus Malzahn and Mustain's mother, Beck Campbell, all declined comment Monday night.
Mustain, the Bulldogs' senior quarterback who was named the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year at a banquet on Monday, committed to Arkansas before a state television audience on Aug. 15 along with teammate and receiver Andrew Norman, who also committed to Arkansas.
The announcement came after a whirlwind of recruiting during the spring and summer for several Springdale players, five of whomcommitted to Division-I colleges during the summer. Those players included offensive lineman Bartley Webb (Notre Dame), receivers Damian Williams and Ben Cleveland (Florida) and both Norman and Mustain, who were the last to make their commitments public.
At the announcement on Aug. 15, Mustain said he chose Arkansas over Notre Dame and that the commitment was a relief after the hectic spring and summer.
In his two years as a starter for the Bulldogs, Mustain is 329 of 492 passing for 5,981 yards and 67 touchdowns. He set the state's Class AAAAA single-season record for yards passing (3,817) this season while leading the Bulldogs to the state championship on Saturday in a 54-20 win over West Memphis in War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock in front of a record crown of 25,386.
