Arkansas Roughs Up Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -- After being sandwiched between three Arkansas defenders, Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley needed to be helped off the field during Saturday's 23-20 Bulldogs' win in Sanford Stadium.

Most of the training staff huddled around Shockley as he sat on the bench during the next series. He later limped into the locker room with a sprained left knee which caused the senior to miss the remainder of the game.

Joe Tereshinki came on in relief, but Georgia coach Mark Richt said he may have handcuffed his backup with conservative play calling. Richt said Shockley is "questionable at best" for next Saturday's game against Florida.

"From my understanding, it's a not a career- or a season-ending injury," Richt said. "It was emotional. We talked so much about team and we talked all week about 'Are we a team or not? Are we one guy or two guys or three guys?' We're a team and we've got to find a way to win regardless of who's out there."

Tereshinki was formidable, completing 5 of 9 passes for 91 yards, including a 43-yard bomb to Sean Bailey late in the second quarter. He also led three scoring drives that ended in field goals.

"With Shockley running around and getting hit a lot, I always know I have to be ready," Tereshinki said. "When coach Richt told me to get warmed up, I didn't get real nervous and just had to focus on what I needed to do."

When Tereshinki came in, the offense gave some encouragement the only way they knew how.

"We didn't have time to sit there and pout about it," said offensive tackle Daniel Inman. "So we grabbed Joe and smacked him in the face and told him, 'Let's go get it done.'"

The Razorbacks kept the normally dual-threat Shockley off his feet well before the injury. They stuffed him on every carry -- mostly scrambles -- as he was stopped for minus-9 yards on 3 rushing attempts. He was sacked twice.

Shockley did hurt the Hogs with his arm, completing 6 of 10 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown before coming out. He used crutches to make it back onto the field for the second half, but spent it on the bench in a gray T-shirt.



Physical Play

Shockley wasn't the only Bulldog roughed up against the Razorbacks. Before halftime, two more headed to the locker room with injuries. They were tight end Martez Milner (shoulder) and rover CJ Byrd (concussion).

"They were very physical and we were expecting that type of game," Richt said. "We had some guys that were true warriors out there who played banged up that you probably didn't even realize (were hurt)."

"Every time you looked around, somebody else was out."

Several more Bulldogs were injured in the second half. They were defensive tackle Dale Dixson (concussion), rover Tra Battle (undisclosed), nose tackle Ray Gant (undisclosed), linebacker Brandon Miller (ankle) and fullback Stephen White (hamstring).

Georgia entered the game already thin defensively. Linebacker Travis Taylor (elbow), tackle Kedric Golston (elbow) and nose tackle Gerald Anderson (concussion) did not play.

"They were so physical," said Darrius Swain. "Their offensive line came after us hard and kept pounding us. They were as physical as any line we've seen and that's what we expected.

'It was physical, but games like this are why you play football."

Arkansas had no injuries to report.



Professionalism?

Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring walked away after a television reporter questioned the Hogs' defense on the pass play to Bailey near the end of the first half.

Herring said: "One negative (expletive) question. Everybody else was professional about it. You're not a (expletive) professional."



Grant's Redemption

Arkansas cornerback Michael Grant was awful in his first -- and only -- career start in a 20-14 loss against Georgia a year ago.

But the sophomore from Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson High redeemed himself Saturday with his first career interception early in the fourth quarter.



Zig, Not Zag!

Arkansas quarterback Robert Johnson must have thought tailback Darren McFadden was going to zig instead of zag. They collided in the backfield on the second play of the game as Johnson tried a hand off.

"I'm glad they ran into each other," Richt said. "It may have been a different game, but instead they ended up having to punt."

The ball popped up into the air and appeared to be smothered by the Bulldogs, but McFadden came away with the recovery. Johnson was credited with an 11-yard loss on the play.



Early Thanksgiving

A turkey dinner was served in the press box prior to kickoff, but it was Arkansas in a giving mood on Georgia's opening drive.

Three penalties -- pass interference, offsides and a facemask -- were whistled against the Hogs. It gave the Bulldogs 16 yards during the drive, which covered 66 yards on six plays in two minutes.



One Man Short

Five seconds into the fourth quarter, Arkansas was forced to call a timeout on third-and-7 from the Georgia 17. Only 10 players were on the field.

The ensuing play was a failed halfback pass and Arkansas was forced to settle for a 35-yard Chris Balseiro field goal that cut the Bulldogs' lead to 20-13.



Grid Bits

Arkansas center Kyle Roper started after being slowed by a knee injury during the week ... Jamaal Anderson started in Anthony Brown's spot at defensive end. Brown is out for the season with an ankle injury ... Defensive tackles turned offensive linemen Fred Bledsoe and Jeremy Harrell debuted new numbers on Saturday. Bledsoe wore No. 76 instead of his usual No. 93. Harrell sported No. 67 instead of No. 97. Neither played.
