Bielema excited about newcomers

Bret Bielema

Bret Bielema's depth chart has a heavy flavor of newcomers, but even more will play than what shows in the two deep. THE DEPTH CHART IS INCLUDED IN THIS STORY.

The depth chart is out and while newcomers aren't listed as starters, a bunch of them will be traveling to Auburn as Bret Bielema begins his second season at Arkansas with another young squad.

Bielema released his depth chart. Aside from a typo that listed junior college transfer Sebastian Tretola at 315 pounds, what raised the most eyebrows was the number of newcomers included. And, Bielema said there were a bunch more that don't show up on the two-deep but will travel and will figure into special teams in the 3 p.m. Saturday opener at Auburn.

"We will play more freshmen than I've ever played," Bielema said. "We are going to play a fair number of young guys."

Making the travel squad by position among true freshmen:

Wide receiver - Jared Collins, Kendrick Edwards and JoJo Robinson.
Offensive line - Frank Ragnow and Brian Wallace.
Quarterback - Rafe Peavey.
Defensive line - Bijohn Jackson, Anthony Brown.
Linebackers - Randy Ramsey, Dwayne Eugene and Khalia Hackett.
Secondary - Josh Liddell, Henre' Tolliver, Santos Ramirez and Cornelius Floyd.
Placekicker - Cole Hedlund.

That does not include junior college tranfers in the mix and that would be Sebastian Tretola in the offensive line, Cody Hollister at wideout and Josh Williams at linebacker. Senior Cameron Jefferson, a transfer from UNLV, is also likely to play in the opener at either guard or tackle and could play tight end in special teams.

There was no fullback listed in the depth chart. Bielema instead chose to highlight his tight ends, going with a starting formation with Hunter Henry and A.J. Derby as starters, along with Alex Voelzke and Jeremy Sprinkle as backups.

If the Hogs use a fullback, and they could, Kody Walker would be first off the bench, but Patrick Arinze is also a candidate in some smashmouth formations there.

Tretola's weight is actually 355 now, after arriving in Fayetteville three weeks ago over 370. He's been losing five pounds a week and could play at 350, not the 315 on the depth chart. Could Bielema ever imagine Tretola at 315?

"Maybe in the eighth grade," Bielema said. "He's been one of our biggest surprise."

Well, big was in reference to ability to learn, not weight. Tretola knows both right and left guard. While he's listed behind Luke Chapentier on the left side, with Jefferson listed at left tackle, it's clear that he's pushing Denver Kirkland at right guard, too.

"Sebastian is right there with Denver and Denver has done very well," Bielema said. "There is no separation.

"Sebastian has caught on very fast. He knows our language very well for someone who got here right before camp. Denver looks good and moves good, too. He's lost 25 pounds and is noticeably different."

Kirkland missed some time with a slight head injury last week, but has been full goal for several days. Bielema said defensive end Deatrich Wise is fine after missing 10 days with a knee strain. Wise is listed as a co-starter with JaMichael Winston.

"Mike took advantage of the time that Deatrich was out and played well in his absence," Bielema said. "(Getting) Wise back is huge. He brings a pass rush and a big body. Mike has done well and Brandon Lewis has had a nice camp, too."

The freshmen are in the plan at linebacker. Randy Ramsey, not on the depth chart, will be in the plan early, Bielema said. That would put him in action along with strong linebackers Braylon Mitchell and Daunte Carr.

But the listed lineup of a 4-3 for Auburn is a conventional look that might not be what they play against Auburn's spread. Tiquention Coleman, not in the depth chart, is a nickel linebacker/safety who has practiced well in camp and was an obvious component of new coordinator Robb Smith's packages in the spring.

Cornerback Tevin Mitchel is listed as an alternate second teamer with D. J. Dean behind Carroll Washington. Mitchel has missed camp because of a hamstring injury after sitting out some of spring drills with shoulder surgery. He was held out of contact early in camp. Bielema said Mitchel would not start, but likely will play on special teams against Auburn.

Bielema was asked specifically about the wide receiver group and the passing game. He said catching the ball was what the Hogs struggled with last year.

"We have caught it well all (camp)," he said. "Keon Hatcher, Drew Morgan, Demetrius Wilson, Cody Hollister and Jared Cornelius have done well.

"Last year, we didn't catch the ones we could catch. That's what is different now. We catch the ball."

As far as formations, he said, "We have a lot of multiple tight end formations and we have the ability to use multiple backs. All of the (backs) are a little different styles. Obviously, they are very good."
