Turner's Quest To Be The Best
One of the state's most top 2016 prospects got a chance to show off his talents in Fayetteville on Thursday. Newport junior-to-be Carl Turner (5-10, 210), who rushed for over 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns as a freshman and for 1,058 yards and 11 scores in an injury-plagued sophomore season, was one of six tailbacks working at Arkansas' Elite Camp earlier this week. "I feel like I have had two pretty good seasons, but I am just working hard to be the best I can be and be one of the best players in the state," Turner said. "Right now I am just continuing to work on building up my muscle and my speed. I had an ankle injury last year and that slowed down my speed a bit. It's going well and I am getting back there now." Turner is a physical specimen with huge, powerful legs that allow him to power through tacklers. "I think I am a very physical back and like to think that one guy is going to bring me down," Turner said. "I think the power I bring to the field is a strength for me and think I have really good vision as well." Turner will get to use those legs and that vision on Newport's new field turf, which was put in recently and has the Greyhounds excited about playing on it this season. "It's a great thing and something that we have all been looking forward to," Turner said. "We want to try and do something special this first season with it. We want to bring Newport another state title." Newport – 9-3 last season - has made the playoffs for 30 straight years now, but has not won a state title since 1991. He joins linebacker Khairan Stafford, offensive lineman Jessie Simmons and safety Deandre Elston – all who attended camp with him on Thursday – as seniors set to lead the Greyhounds. "Right now we are looking pretty good for next year," Turner said. "We need some younger guys to step up and do big things because we lost some of our elite players. Our seniors – we don't have a bunch of them – but we'll work with what we have and we will lead the way." Turner is starting to get recruiting attention, including from a pair of SEC schools. "Right now Ole Miss and Arkansas are the two teams showing the most interest," Turner said. "I am getting to know the Arkansas coaches better now. I think they are some very good coaches and are going to get Arkansas going again." Carl Turner Newport standoutds Khairan Stafford, Carl Turner, DeAndre Elston and Jessie Simmons were on hand for Arkansas' Elite Camp on Thursday.
