Arkansas and Mississippi State traded strong pitching performances in a doubleheader split on…
Mississippi State 5, Arkansas 1
The victory gave the Bulldogs (20-10, 6-3) the series win as they took the final two games of the three-game set over the Razorbacks (17-10, 4-5).
Detz gave Mississippi State an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Arkansas starter Chris Oliver allowed a single to lead off hitter Jake Vickerson and then he homered on a 3-1 count.
Arkansas cut it to 2-1 in the fourth when Joe Serrano doubled and Brian Anderson singled him home.
That was followed by Krisjon Wilkerson's one-out single that chased Anderson to third and brought on Lindgren (3-0) to replace Bulldogs starter Trevor Fitts.
Lindgren got out of the jam by getting Clark Eagan to pop up to the catcher on a bunt attempt and fanning Bobby Wernes.
The Bulldogs moved their lead to 3-1 in the fifth when Vickerson walked, stole second, moved up to third on an errant throw and scored on Wes Rea's single.
It grew to 4-1 in the seventh when Detz' ground out off Arkansas reliever Jacob Stone – who replaced Colin Poche after he got one out - brought home Gavin Collins home.
Arkansas had the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the eighth, but Jonathan Holder relieved and fanned Eric Fisher with the bases loaded to end the threat.
Holder picked up his fourth save by fanning three in a 1 2/3 innings on a day when the Razorbacks whiffed 14 times.
Derrick Armstrong's sacrifice fly scored Brett Pirtle in the bottom of the 8th to cap the scoring.
Oliver (2-3) allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
The Razorbacks will play five games in five days beginning Tuesday night at 6:35 when it host Nebraska.
The two teams will then meet again on Wednesday at 1:35 and then the Razorbacks will host South Carolina for a three-game set beginning Thursday at 7 p.m.
