Restocking the Razorback Cupboard
All three of Arkansas fall basketball signees have finished off or are in the process of finishing outstanding senior seasons.
North Little Rock point guard Anton Beard (6-1, 180) scored a a team-high 29 points and was named the Class 7A state tournament MVP after his team downed Springdale 89-81 in the championship game Thursday night in Hot Springs.
He also had a 28-point performance in a semifinal win over Bentonville.
"Anton just loves the big stage," North Little Rock head coach Johnny Rice said. "The bigger the stage, the better he plays. He's going to be a great player for Arkansas."
Forrest City senior big man Trey Thompson (6-10, 250), averaging 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks per game this season, has his team playing in the Class 5A state championship against Jacksonville Friday at 3:30 p.m in Hot Springs.
He had a 22-point, 20-rebound performance in a quarterfinal round win in the state tournament after opening with a 27-point, 15-board effort.
"Here is a guy that is just scratching the surface," Forrest City head coach Dwight Lofton said. "He can't wait to get up there, get in great shape and be a big contributor for the Razorbacks."
Arlington, Texas, Martin guard Nick Babb (6-5, 190) had an all-around great season while averging 13.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.9 assists.
Babb played point guard a lot for his squad this season, but is looked at as a shooting guard or small forward on the next level.
"He is so good at so many things," Arlington Martin head coach Jeff Plemons said. "He can play the one, two or three on offense and also on defense. His versatility is his biggest strength and he is just perfect for (Arkansas head) Coach (Mike) Anderson's system."
His older brother Chris Babb – a former Iowa State star - is now on his second 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics.
Babb, whose team finished 20-8, took in Arkansas' win over Georgia on March 1.
Arkansas, which will also add in 6-7, 210-pound West Virginua transfer Keaton Miles next season, just got a commitment Thursday night from Seminole, Okla., State College point guard Jabril Durham (6-1, 180). Durham, originally from DeSoto, Texas, started his career out at NAIA Lubbock Christian.
He averaged 11.1 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds per game before deciding to transfer to a junior college in his quest to play NCAA Division I basketball. Durham flourished at Seminole this past season while averaging 21.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.5 rebounds.
He shot 50.1 percent from the field and 44.1 percent from 3-point range while also making 74.2 percent of his free throw attempts.
Durham had a trio of 3-point games this season, six double-digit assist games and nearly a quadruple double in his season opener when he had 15 points, 10 assists, 10 steals and 9 rebounds.
Arkansas is also known to be recruiting 6-8, 220-pound Connors State forward Willie Atwood.
Atwood, a Memphis native and former Arkansas Wings AAU teammate of current Razorbacks Bobby Portis and Moses Kingsley, is coming off a banner season. He was named the Oklahoma Collegiate Atheltic Conference and Region II Player of the Year after averaging 21 points and 9 rebounds this past season.
Atwood shot 57.5 percent from the field and 77.1 percent from the free throw line as he made a whopping 256-of-332 free throws this season.
He recorded 10 double-doubles during the season with a high of 49 points against Independence – a game in which he made 33 of 39 free throw attempts.
