Cats top EKU
A day after braving frequent downpours and a three-hour rain delay in a win over Murray State, No. 8 Kentucky endured snow showers and temperatures in the low 30s on Wednesday at Cliff Hagan Stadium on its way to a 6-2 win over Eastern Kentucky.
J.T. Riddle had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. The junior second baseman also had a walk and scored two runs to lead the Cats (7-1).
Kentucky also got hits from A.J. Reed, Max Kuhn, Zac Zellers, Matt Reida, Kyle Barrett and Micheal Thomas. Reida doubled and drove in two runs.
Freshman left-hander Ryne Combs worked a career-long 3.1 innings in his first collegiate start, allowing six hits and no runs, walking one and striking out two. Senior Walter Wijas (1-0) replaced him in a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth inning, getting a pair of quick outs to end the Colonels' scoring threat. He allowed only two unearned runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Freshman Dylan Dwyer took over to start the sixth, working a career-long 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Another freshman, Zach Strecker, came on in a save situation in the eighth, but after walking the bases loaded, UK turned to Trevor Gott to secure the victory. He picked up his first save of the year and the 12th of his career by striking out all four batters he faced.
Eastern Kentucky (3-4) starter Chris Cervantes worked an inning in a predetermined start. The Colonels used nine arms in relief, including Ben Gullo, Trey Salisbury, Blake Bottoms (0-1), Austin Rexroat, Jake Hall, Matt Lynch, Eric Nerl, Cody Creamer and Myles Scott each worked in relief.
UK returns to action Friday for the first of a four-game weekend set against Akron. Game 1 is set for 4 p.m. ET.
* Kyle Barrett made his first career start, batting eighth as the designated hitter and collecting his first hit and first stolen base.
* Wijas has inherited four runners on the season, allowing none of them to score.
* Riddle picked up his fifth multi-hit game of the season and 31st of his career.
* Austin Cousino had his streak of 14 consecutive games reaching base safely snapped with a 0-for-3 game and a sacrifice fly. He has reached base safely in 66 of 70 career games.
