Runaway Win

There was no post-Thanksgiving hangover for Ole Miss on Friday. The Rebels did to Lipscomb what they were supposed to do to Lipscomb, running away with a blowout win.

Ole Miss made 6 of its first 8 shots, including a pair of 3s from Murphy Holloway and Marshall Henderson, en route to a 17-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game.

From there, the Rebels needed only to set their point total. The final score: Ole Miss 91, Lipscomb 45. Lipscomb didn't reach 30 points until the 11-mintue mark in the second half. The Rebels have scored at least 90 points in four of their five games.

"Approach is everything with us. I was really pleased with the way we came out of the gate," Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy said. "Murph admitted as much last game, sometimes it's hard to stay on edge when you're playing an opponent that you feel like you're superior to. I was proud of him."

Holloway, who had 12 points and six rebounds in the first half, led Ole Miss in scoring, finishing with 23 points, three shy of his career high. He dominated the game, totaling eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. He capped his game in style, with an alley-oop slam with 11:57 remaining.

His career-high is 26 points against Indiana in 2009.

"The approach was great," Holloway said. "We came out fired up. I just do what I do, and some nights you score more than others. I just try to be active and try to get to the ball and get to the hoop."

With the win, Ole Miss moved to 5-0 on the year, and next faces Rutgers Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. to close out its six-game homestand. Ole Miss is now 56-2 in non-conference home games in seven seasons under Kennedy.

Friday was another tune-up of sorts, what with the Rebels nearing the meat of their non-conference schedule.

A road trip to Middle Tennessee State, the first for Ole Miss this season, follows Rutgers, and then the Rebels travel to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic for Christmas.

"Much stiffer challenge as we approach the SEC-Big East Challenge," Kennedy said. "Two very difficult games upcoming. I'm anxious to see who we are. I think Rutgers will be an opportunity for us to see that."

Ole Miss was 30 of 69 from the floor in the win, including 8 of 32 from 3. Henderson had 10 points, while Nick Williams had 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting and three rebounds. Reginald Buckner totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

Lipscomb (2-2) was led by Stephen Hurt, who had 14 points and seven rebounds.

True freshman guard Martavious Newby saw his most extensive action to date, and he was active in 20 minutes. Along with his seven points, Newby notched six steals and three rebounds.

"I think I'm doing good so far," Newby said of his performance in the first five games of his career. "Right now, I'm just coming in, playing my role and trying to earn minutes. I see coach playing me more. As I see that, I just execute in practice and work hard every day. I'm just going hard."

The Rebels owned the glass, grabbing 43 rebounds to Lipscomb's 38, and were good on 23 of their 33 free throws.

Millinghaus update:

Derrick Millinghaus suffered a lateral meniscus tear against UALR. He's out 4-6 weeks. Kennedy provided a status report on the freshman point guard following the win over Lipscomb.

"Progressing tremendously. It could not have gone better to this point," Kennedy said. "My hope is that he's on the short end of the rehab -- three, four weeks -- because he brings us an option that we need."
