Arkansas Hires Johnson

Taver Johnson

Arkansas fills a vacancy on its staff by hiring Ohio State secondary coach and co-defensive coordinator Taver Johnson, who was named the assistant head coach for the Razorbacks and will also coach linebackers.

Arkansas has swapped one linebacker coach named Johnson for another.

Razorback head coach Bobby Petrino confirmed through a press release that he has added Ohio State assistant Taver Johnson to his staff to replace Reggie Johnson, who left to become defensive coordinator at UAB.

Johnson, who has also coached in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders and also was at Miami (Ohio) University, was named assistant head coach and will also coach linebackers.

"Taver is an extremely enthusiastic and devoted coach," said Coach Petrino. "He has a strong work ethic, is a great teacher of the game and is skillful at relating to his players. During his time at Ohio State, he became familiar with the principles Coach (Paul) Haynes has worked to incorporate here."

He joins the staff of defensive coordinator Paul Haynes, who he coached with at Ohio State.

Johnson confirmed the hire with the Columbus Dispatch.

This is a great opportunity, getting the chance to be an assistant head coach and some of the added duties that will come with that," Johnson told the paper. "With that said, I love Ohio State. Urban Meyer is an incredible coach, and I really am appreciative of the opportunity coach Jim Tressel gave me (six years ago) to come to a place I've always wanted to be a part of." Johnson was the secondary coach and part of a Ohio State program that went 50-15 over the last five years.

"He has also been a part of a program with a culture of consistently winning and will be instrumental in preparing our players to compete for championships," Petrino added.

Johnson, who is the fourth new coach added to the Razorback staff since the end of the regular season, is a native of Cincinnati and former two-time All-American at Whittenberg.

Arkansas has also announced a new director of high school relations in Jason Shumaker, who replaced Kevin Peoples.

Peoples has moved to the field to coach the defensive line for the Razorbacks.

Shumaker was the offensive coordinator for Midland University and former head coach at Dana College.
